Happy New Year

January 5th, 2009

Hey all!

I hope this post finds you all relaxed and rested after the Christmas and the New Year holidays, and everyone is settled back into a daily work routine, resolutions firmly in mind. The days are getting longer, and the weather should start getting better in the next couple of months.

Well in typical not following up on promises style, I’m yet to actually follow up my first post with the afforementioned “Why work in the Japanese Games Industry?” post. This blogging malarky is trickier than I expected; I’ve written a couple of thousand words on the topic, but I can’t help but think it’s a bit rambly. In any case, I’m going to edit it and get it online as soon as I find the time.

In the meantime, just to show I’m keeping on the topic (just about), I’ve got a couple of links to share.

First up is the All Japanese All the Time blog. This guy is great! He claims to have learned Japanese to a fluent level within 18 months, and judging by his motivational writing ability, I sure as hell believe him! I’d well recommend this guy for anyone out there learning Japanese.

Second up is an interesting interview with Tokyo Based localisation firm 8-4. The article gives some great insight into the differences between Eastern and Western audiences and how Japanese companies can better address the Western audience, good stuff!

Anyhow, I’m using the new year to ramp up my Japanese learning again, hopefully it will last further than February! Hope there’s some interesting reading in the above two links to keep you happy until I actually finish my “Why?” post.

    Hey man, Happy New Year!

That guys sites great! And its true! I didnt much pay attention in class, but I spent all my time watching movies in Japanese, Drama’s, socialising and well drinking and I’ve got to where I am now with my level. Doing that in a year will set you straight on the path to good japanese :)

    So P-a-r-t-y :D

Ps. I made a commitment to myself. I’m gonna exhibit artwork by the end of the year in Japan and have an idea on what route I’m going down art and animation wise. It may not be the Japanese games industry, but it will be the Japanese art industry :D

    weeeee. 2009 feels good!

    Hey Jenny,

Happy new year to you! That’s really positive that you’re doing that, I’m sure fruitful stuff will come of it.

There’s a few links that you might be interested in:

http://www.gbsf.org.uk/ - This foundation provides grants for projects related to arts and culture. There’s a guy here in Brighton who brings bands over every few months and puts tours together (http://uk.myspace.com/icfj). Might be able to apply for a grant?

http://www.ukjapan2008.jp/grant/index-e.html - Also provides grants for areas in the arts (though this is specifically between two organisations rather than to individuals… Maybe Abertay would be interested?)

http://www.dajf.org.uk/ - Provide various grants, including for the arts

Hope there’s something useful in there for you
